A Butterfly Obsession

Here are a few exceptional books for kiddos and teens who have an affinity for butterflies! Even a classic board book for the very young!

Whether you are introducing your children to butterflies, creating a unit-study of winged insects or looking for the perfect book for a butterfly aficionado, Sensational Butterflies is the go-to book.

Filled with scores of facts, it's the magnificent hand-drawn illustrations which will keep children picking the book up over and over!

What a lovely way to help children name that funny feeling in their tummies! A belly full of beautiful  butterflies just dancing around ready to flitter out and soar away when you try something new is a wonder-filled image for children to think about when feeling nervous. Chen's illustrations are reminiscent of mid-century illustrators Seiden and Myers - but with real-world diversity!

You cannot go wrong with a Gail Gibbons' science book -- especially when it was updated in 2021! Not only are the beautiful illustrations labeled perfectly for curious children, the information has been vetted by experts.

For the older child or teen who is interested in insect and butterfly science or for one who draws butterflies, the story of Maria Merian is astounding. The 13-year-old's curiosity about a connection between caterpillars and butterflies changed the course of science when her observations and illustrations revealed the truth about metamorphosis!

Parents can never go wrong with Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar!
Babies love to poke their finger through the "bite holes" and toddlers will enjoy the vibrant colors in this classic - and the next time they see a caterpillar, they might even remember it eats and eats and eats before turning into a butterfly!
