Nonna's Recommendation

Children will be mesmerized by the illustrations and fascinating facts!
  • This is an excellent book to use with younger children for quiet time or as morning basket "reads".
  • It's also a phenomenal book to add to a unit-study at home.
  • Finally, if your child simply wants to know everything there is to know about butterflies, then this is an exceptional choice for their library!

I want this book in my library!

Ben Rothery

Synopsis

Rothery describes himself as a boy who "grew up from a wildlife-obsessed boy to a detail-obsessed illustrator." Growing up he wanted to be a shark, a dinosaur, and a cross between David Attenborough and Indiana Jones. Visit his website to catch a glimpse of Rothery at work: Ben Rothery Illustration.
An oversized book filled with gorgeous illustrations of butterflies and moths. Clear, succinct text covers the primary butterfly and moth families & their ecosystems, as well as their differences and similarities. Amazing double-page illustrations showing wingspans in intricate detail!

World Relevance

Butterflies, especially Monarch butterflies, are in the news just now: the International Union for Conservation of Nature has designated the migratory monarch as endangered.  The North American Western Monarch population is practically decimated - in 2021 there were only 1,914 Western Monarchs, down from nearly 10 million in the 1980s. A rapidly changing spring and summer weather pattern at breeding grounds is the biggest culprit in the loss of this unique butterfly species - the only one which makes a two-way, 3,000 mile migration.
