NASA has successfully launched Artemis I - we are on the way to the moon again!  It's possible we could even land on the moon with the launch of Artemis III....

I thought you might be interested in some of the books about the moon, stars, cosmos and NASA reviewed at Stories Matter.

The moon is so mysterious, unless you have a young astronaut in your home who wants to know just about everything there is to know about the moon!

Find resources at NASA Science Earth's Moon site.  The Smithsonian also has phenomenal resources for "Walking on the Moon!"

Margaret Hamilton was one of the heroes of the Apollo 11 mission! When an error on the astronauts' checklist endangered the first lunar landing, her programming code allowed the computer to focus on the single task of landing safely.

Wonderful children's picture biography!

This is a must-read book for anyone fascinated by robots, artificial intelligence, spaceships or space exploration. Littles will love examining the stunning illustrations over and over, while older children will read and re-read the details about Curiosity's construction and mission.

More to Learning

The best way to learn about the world is to experience it - to live in it!  Doug's rebellion is a sweet story about how a boy-robot discovers he can learn from the real thing rather than being plugged in. The illustrations are bold, color-filled blocks with swooping, curving black lines - simple images with a great amount of movement to attract a child's eye.  Adults will see the book as a commentary on screen time, but children will simply see the power of fun and freedom in Doug's escapades!

Ideas for Making It Real

An adventure day - or Doug-Day! - is intended do something a bit different than normal. These times are vitally important for children and adults' health alike!  And sometimes they don't even need to be a whole day!

Here are a few questions to get your creativity flowing:
  • Have you visited a fire station recently? Is there another community service or center your child might like to see?
  • What about counting the number of birds you see on your daily walk?  Or dandelions? Or how many times you can wave to a passing car.... endless ways to practice counting.
  • Can you draw a map of your neighborhood or the building you live in? Or, if you can collect small boxes, paper tubes, etc., what about building a model of your neighborhood?

It's about taking - or creating - time to see and experience the world from a new perspective and showing our kiddos how to do the same.

Recap & Review

Food is always a winner when sharing our different customs and culture with friends!

Bilal helps his Dad prepare daal before playing with his friends. Throughout the day "Is it done?" accompanies hopscotch, swimming games and hiking - but when it's time to eat every child is at the door!

Charming and spot on for any parent who has cooked for a child's friends!

Parents' Simplicity Credo
Love people and admire our differences.

Reading Suggestions

This is the perfect book to read with a child who complains about the different food her friend brings to school, as well as for the child who is teased at school because her food is different.

Teaching admiration for - as well as pride in - differences must be purposeful and consistent and beginning with food is a simple way to start.  As a former elementary school principal, it was important to me that we encouraged children to talk about the food in their lunches and to describe to us why they were so wonderful and special. Bilal Cooks Daal would have been on my lunch-time read aloud list! Recommend it to your child's teachers.
