DK - Doris Kindersly

Initially, in 1974, DK was set up as a book packager with the purpose of editing and designing complicated books for ease in publishing. But by 1982 DK was a publisher in its own right. A DK book has a distinctive design, is easily recognizable and worth every penny because of the beauty of their design and their accuracy.

Book Brief

Okay, so I am totally in love with the book reviewed yesterday, Botanicum, but today's Smithsonian book also meets my heart's desire to share with you exceptional books for your children!

Kiddos can explore the world of plants with fascinating facts accompanying more than 1,000 images - learn about the weirdest, smelliest and deadliest plants. And where is the tallest tree in the world which is more than 600 years old? Or why does the Khasi Tribe grow living bridges taking -  at least 100+ years to complete - across their rivers? Or why is the cherry tree represent the fragility of life?  There is so much to learn!

And my home town - Tualatin, Oregon - is included for its annual Pumpkin Regatta!

Learning Ideas

Family Read Aloud Time
I will share this book with Little Guy today at our weekly visit!  We will sit together, turn a few pages while I point out some of the pictures. His questions will give us time to learn together. The perfect way to "read" a book like this one cuddled up close with my favorite little guy.

Learning at Home
I am inspired by this book to develop lessons for Little Guy using read aloud story and picture books - The Selfish Giant and Wabi Sabi to go along with the "River of Blossom" about the cherry blossom festivals in Japan.

Classroom Resource
A MUST resource for primary classrooms! You could also use it with the Smithsonian's Teaching Resources about plants.
