"Many unhappy eyes peered through the kitchen door. "This is horrible!" Leon whispered. "Who left the front door open? We can't have customers today! Our party will be ruined."

"Let's get rid of them," said Tatyana. "I'll bang pots together. The noise will scare them away."

Grandmother had heard all that she could bear. She dropped her peeled potato into the pot and said, "Enough! In old country we bang pots at wolves, not hungry people. Today is Thanksgiving Day. Family cooks turkey big as a doghouse, but we don't share? Bah!" She shook her head."

Debby Atwell

As a landscaper painter and  iconographer, Atwell's illustrations for children's books are highly stylized and vividly colored. She is the author-illustrator of Barn, River and Pearl and illustrator for The Day Hans Got His Way, Sleeping Moon and Miss Moore Thought Otherwise.

Synopsis

When Ann burns the turkey dinner, she and Ed unknowingly intrude on an immigrant family's own Thanksgiving celebration at their new restaurant.

Relevance

The Thanksgiving Door celebrates sharing as the true reflection of gratitude. Regardless of the differences in traditions from one culture to the next, freely giving to others is at the heart of all thanksgiving.
