""And where is this place?" we ask again.

She shows us pictures of strange cities, strange forests and strange animals until she finally sighs, "We will go there and not be frightened anymore.""

Francesca Sanna

Sanna, from Sardinia, holds a degree in architecture at the University of Cagliari and earned a Master in Design from the University of Applied Arts of Lucerne.  Since graduation she has authored or illustrated seven books with The Journey her first title in 2016. Sanna's books have been translated into more than 15 languages and her art recognized by the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Kirkus Reviews and Publisher Weekly.  Sanna is a children's book artist to watch - her body of work is already impressive!

Book Synopsis

Sanna began collecting migration stories by interviewing the people she met when she worked at a refugee centre in Italy. The Journey is a collage of those true personal journeys.

Amnesty International UK recommends this book because "it reminds us that we all have the right to a safe place to live."

Picture book, 40 pages. Lives are changed forever by war and a family's journey to safety is told and beautifully illustrated for a child's understanding.

Learning Options

Family Read Aloud Time
Stepping out of our own shoes to experience walking in another person's shoes is a habit to be cultivated.  The Journey is not a feel-good bed time story, but an essential family read aloud to be followed up with lots and lots of discussions.

Classroom Resource
Amnesty International UK offers a whole range of resources for teaching human rights through fiction including Classroom Notes for The Journey.

Learning at Home
Giving children the opportunity to practice kindness is an essential empathy habit. Kids for Peace, a global not-for-profit, "empowers kids to create peace through hands-on service, global friendships and thoughtful acts of kindness." The family edition of "The Great Kindness Challenge" is a good place to start if you need ideas on how to purposefully practice kindness.
