Swing Sisters

7/15/2021

Picture
Picture book, 32 pages. In 1939, Dr. Jones started a school band just for the girls at the Piney Woods Country Life School. After the girls left the school, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm became the first integrated all women band and performed swing and jazz around the world. Published in 2015 by Holiday House.

Team Players, Perseverance, Grit

Sometimes our heroes and heroines are not individuals, but a team or a band or a group of scientists -- there is a synergy between each member's gifts and effort that create a whole that is far greater and more inspiring than any one individual's contribution. As wonderful as John, Paul, George, or Ringo were individually, the Beatles immediately comes to mind when we think of these musicians.

Learning to become a team player who puts the team or the group ahead of individual goals is an important character trait for our kiddos. The Sweethearts began as a school band who began their practices at 7am and worked throughout the day to improve - the perseverance and grit exhibited by each girl to accomplish such a daily task is worthy of remembrance.
