Picture book, 32 pages. Pet Club excludes elephants, but children with unusual pets show the Pet Club how to be a true friend. Published in 2015 by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books.

Book Recap

A group of children who own unusual pets meet each other at the park when they are each excluded from the Pet Club. But they start their own club where "All are Welcome" and everyone practices kindness because "that's what friends do."

Family Read Aloud Time
There are so many good reasons to read this book over and over to your children including the simple sweetness of the text and illustrations!

Learning at Home
Pet ownership is a good way to learn compassion and responsibility. Strictly No Elephants is a great resource for teaching friendship, but also to open up conversations about how to treat wild animals.

Classroom Options
There's  a plethora of classroom lessons and resources for social/emotional learning using Strictly No Elephants.  Even LakeShore as a Learning Kit to purchase (which may be a bit over the top...)


Lisa Mantchev

Mantchev writes children's picture books and young adult novels. Strictly No Elephants has been translated into 14 languages and sold one hundred thousand copies worldwide. Mantchev's YA novels include fantasy and Steampunk.

Taeeun Yoo

Yoo has earned the Society of Illustrators' Founders Award as well as the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award - twice! In addition to illustrating children's picture books, stationary and home goods, she illustrated the reissue of Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet and The Austin Chronicle series.
