The Heart of Winter A long time ago, prior to The Game of Thrones, using the phrase "the heart of winter" was a bit more benign in intent. More descriptive of specific time in winter when it seems the coldest and darkest. Although the darkest time of year in the Northern hemisphere is at the winter solstice, I tend to get discouraged by the long, cold, wet days at the end of January. I look forward to February and St. Valentine's Day -- it's a marker of hope that the darkness will come to an end. Really. It. Will. What if we spoke of the heart of winter as that beautiful place in the dark days when our hearts and minds grow in peace and strength, restored by purposefully seeking out the beauty and rhythms of the natural world around us?
