Nonna's Reading Guide to Robots for Children

Superb (but where are the girls!?)

Geesh - it has been difficult to find superb children's books about robots! There are many picture books about robots and artificial intelligence, but very few which I would take the time to share with Little Guy & Noodle. And, unfortunately, even the good books trend towards boys interacting with robots - I found only one picture book for littles with a female protagonist and it's not included in what I consider the best of the best.

My search began with Little Guy's robot and rescue transformers' obsession. His favorite game just now is "Transformer Yoga" where he moves from being a robot to a transformed vehicle as an example for the rest of us to practice.  My favorite has been the robot to bulldozer - it's one Nonna can actually do well!  (Until Little Guy added a somersault to the transformation, sigh.) Anyway, here are my recommendations for fun, beautiful and accurate picture books about robots I share with Little Guy & Noodle, as well as a superb read aloud series we've started.

I do apologize that this list still trends sexist....

Calling children's book authors:
Where are the good picture books about girls and robots?!

Little ones will love the pictures alongside sweet, funny stories in Doug Unplugged, Robomop & Clink.  Grouped thematically - primarily home, family, friends - it's the quietly subversive social justice commentaries that are just the thing I know my littles will notice.

Robots & Robots are both excellent books to make the transition to fact-based, robot information.  Older children interested in what makes a robot tick, will devour these books -- and I love the vocabulary development possible when read aloud to both young and older kiddos.

Wow. Just wow - this is a must-read book for anyone fascinated by robots, artificial intelligence or space exploration. Littles will love examining the stunning illustrations over and over, while older children will read and re-read the details about Curiosity's construction and mission.

I am in love with these books! Roz, an AI robot, is an inspiration on what it means to be a good person as she travels through her adventures, overcoming some pretty big obstacles. Perfect read aloud stories!
