Child's reference book, 223 pages. A whimisical and inspirational nature guide for young people. Published in 2015 by Storey Publishing.

Julia Rothman

Rothman is an illustrator whose work can be found on wallpaper, bedding, billboards, fabric, clothing, pillows, magazines, books, umbrellas, subways, posters, mugs and much more!  You might be surprised at where you have already seen her work -- I was!

Nature Anatomy follows Farm Anatomy, but precedes Food Anatomy!

Book Brief

Nature Anatomy grew out of Rothman's desire to continue studying nature after learning so many incredible things about agriculture in writing and illustrating Farm Anatomy. She asked her friend, John Niekrasz, to show her "cool stuff" she might not have found on her own during daily walks in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

Rothman's book is the epitome of a nature-diary!
"I guess I think of this project as MY nature book. It's information I was interested in learning about, the things I wanted to draw and paint. While it is only a teeny scratch on  the surface, it gave me a chance to become acquainted with plants, animals, trees, grasses, bugs, precipitation, land masses, and bodies of water that I wanted to be able to name when I walked by."

Learning Ideas

Family Read Aloud Time
While quite entertaining, this would not be a traditional read aloud. Sections could be shared at breakfast or another time when family members have time to look at the pictures and text together.

Learning at Home
Calli at Sparrow and Lilies created a good nature study schedule to accompany Rothman's Nature Anatomy. It is free and easily adjustable to your home learning schedule.

Classroom Resource
Nature Anatomy is an excellent classroom resource for units on classification and identification.
