"It was a long way to Aunt Rosie's house.

Little Red walked under the giraffes, over the sleepy crocodiles, and past the chattering monkeys.

She crept around the termite mounds and under the leaping gazelles."

Alex T. Smith

Smith's (1985 - ) first book, Eliot Jones, Midnight Superhero, received the Coventry Inspiration Book Award in 2008. Since then Smith has illustrated more than thirty children's books. His most well known books include the Claude series about the misadventures of a small, round dog.

Book Synopsis

An updated take on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale in which Little Red outsmarts the Lion on her way to her Auntie's house.

Picture book, 32 pages. Little Red teaches the hungry Lion some good manners about not eating children and Aunties.

Learning Options

Family Read Aloud Time
The illustrations are particularly silly which will draw out quite a few giggles during an afternoon read.

Classroom Resource
This book could be a secondary resource to supplement a fairy tale unit.

Learning at Home
This title could be a jumping off point for lessons about world fables and fairy tales - something light to use as a contrast to the fables in Mholphe and Griffin's African Tales: A Barefoot Collection.
