The Elephant in the Room It is incredibly fascinating to read a celebrity-authored picture book more than 20 years after it was first published. In the year we were introduced to Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type and Olivia, Will Smith and Kadir Nelson joined forces to create a children's book based on Smith's rap - an ode to fatherhood. And, frankly, this book stands the test of time - even with the Academy Awards elephant in the room! A father's love and commitment to his child doesn't fade just because we are less than perfect. It is in those moments of personal mistakes that being a parent is most real - in Smith's case, the commitment to always have his child's back is not negated by one very public mistake. Kadir Nelson In addition to Kadir Nelson's many, many awards over the years, The Undefeated was a triple winner in 2020 with the Caldecott Award, the Newbery Honor Book, and the Coretta Scott King Award. If you are not familiar with this artist, take the time to learn more - his recent exhibition, In Our Lifetime: Paintings from the Pandemic, at the Norman Rockwell Gallery captured his reflections on current national and global events. Unfortunately, this book is not available through Bookshop.org.
