During the Great Depression, Beebe was a modern-day celebrity for his risk-taking explorations of the jungles and oceans. He was inquisitive, patient and thoughtful. Beebe's passion for investigating and watching animals in their natural habitats led to some remarkable, and unusual, inventions.
Beebe's parents actively supported and encouraged his interests -- encouraging our own children to observe and explore the world of their interests is one of the best gifts we can give as parents.
One of the Most Important Naturalist
Again, there are not many children's books about one of the most important Naturalists in history, but start with
Beebe was a prolific writer for popular and academic audiences, but he did not write for children. Young adults might find Beebe's account of his record-breaking dives in Half a Mile Down or excepts from an article in the 1934 National Geographic fascinating. He wrote quite a few books, but this is a good place to start.
