"I am not alone.

I am connected

to my friends,

to the world.

We are all humans together."

Susan Verde

Verde, a yogi, teaches yoga and writes books for children of all ages. In addition to the I Am series, she has written stories such as The Tossy-Turny Princess and the Pea, The Three Little Yogis and the Wolf Who Lost His Breath, and The Water Princess.  Verde also writes for the Yoga Digest and MindBodyGreen and has appeared on livehappy and KidLitTV podcasts.

Peter H. Reynolds

Reynolds writes and illustrates children's books, as well as animated films.  If you've read the Judy Bloom series, the Sydney and Simon series, or The Dot, you are quite familiar with Reynolds artistic style. International Dot Day, September 15ish,  is a global celebration of creativity in the classroom.

Book Synopsis

Follow a boy - born on page one - on his journey of dreams, curiosity, learning about mistakes and feelings. The supportive text encourages the boy's empathy for himself, as well as others.
Picture book, 32 pages. A short, but definitive, affirmation that children can act compassionately and with empathy for themselves and others.

Learning Options

Family Read Aloud Time
Reading I Am Human aloud after hurt feelings between siblings or friends is a non-judgemental, feet-on-the ground approach to developing empathy.

Classroom Resource
The I Am series is an exceptional resource for social emotional learning for kindergarten though 5th grades. Verde's Teacher's Guides are excellent.

Learning at Home
Teaching children at home can be fraught with unreasonably high expectations for everyone.  I recommend homeschooling parents read - and memorize - I Am Human. This book is more for you, than for your children.
