Bob Graham

Graham is an Australian author and illustrator of books primarily for very young children. Although he claims his first picture book was created by accident, he has published books which have earned the Nestle's Smarties Book Prize, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal, as well as receiving the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award 8 times!

Book Synopsis

Will and his Mother help a bird with a broken wing, even when nobody else saw it.  But with rest, time and little hope a bird may fly again!

Learning Options

Family Read Aloud Time
Even a small child's empathy can bring healing and hope to the world. Although a simple story, this is a profoundly important book for family read aloud time -- the pictures and simple text  empower young children to act with empathy.

Classroom Resource
Walker Books, an imprint of Candlewick Press, offers a good cross-curricular Classroom Ideas for use with PK-1st students.

Learning at Home
PeTA has age-appropriate resources at How to Heal a Broken Wing and Other Lessons in Empathy. You could also use cross-curricular How To Heal a Broken Wing Teaches to Protect Animals and Act with Loving Kindness offered by Jewish Learning Matters. Both are excellent -- just from different perspectives.
