How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?

3/14/2020

Picture
What if a dinosaur catches the flu?

Does he whimper and whine in between each 'atchoo'?

What does a dinosaur do?

Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?

Does he fling his medicine out of the door?

Jane Yolen, Author

Yolen, one of my favorite authors, has written over 350 children's books and is the winner of the Caldecott Award - twice - as well as the Regina Medal for her body of children's literature.  She wrote Love You Like Crazy Cakes - an incredible picture book about adoption.

Mark Teague, Illustrator

Teague has authored more than twenty children's books, as well as illustrated over forty picture books. He co-created How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? with Yolen in 2000; there are twelve titles in the series.

WORLD CONTEXT

Our current pandemic creates a scary world for all of us, but especially for younger children who may sense the grown-up concerns about getting sick. There are many, many picture books which make different illnesses or conditions accessible to children, but I am particularly fond of Yolen & Teague's books. How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? clearly addresses children's emotions which is what we need now.

And the illustrations make me laugh every time!

SYNOPSIS

Being sick enough to go to the doctor can be quite scary for little children -- for anyone -- and we forget they may not know what to do or how to behave while ill.

Yolen & Teague's hilarious read-aloud verse and silly pictures of giant 'little' dinosaurs at the doctor's office or recovering in bed are reassuring in every sense.

The ten different dinosaurs illustrated capture a number of a child's fears and turn them into something quite manageable!
