Picture, poetry, biography book, 48 pages. Published by Clarion Books in 2015.

Recap & Review

Drum Dream Girl is the inspiring story of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl, who defied the traditional taboo against female drummers in Cuba during the 1930s. She joined her 11 sisters in an all-girl band, Anacaona, playing with numerous jazz artists around the world including at the Roosevelt White House.

PARENTS SIMPLICITY CREDO
Love people & admire our differences.

Reading Suggestions

Dreaming big dreams is also another developmental milestone for children, and it's okay for the dreams to change from time to time. But the foundation of life-long dreams are those childhood passions that last - and when these interests are taboo there is a problem!  Drum Dream Girl is a wonderful read aloud; take your time to share the illustrations and to talk about the big questions your kiddo may have about why the girl's dream was not okay for a very long time.  Our differences are necessary and admirable, but they shouldn't be used to keep anyone from accomplishing their dreams or goals!

Engle & Lopez

Engle, a Cuban American poet and novelist, is a Newbery Honor and a Pura Belpre Honor recipient. Born in Los Angeles, Engle spent her summers in her Mother's homeland, Cuba.

Lopez, born and raised in Mexico City, illustrates children's books that honor and reflect the lives of all young people. He has received numerous awards including the Schneider Family Book Award for his illustrations in Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor's Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You.
