Dracul

10/18/2021

Picture
Young adult novel, 493 pages; published by G.P.Putnam & Sons in 2018. A fictionalized tale about Bram Stoker, recounting his seemingly very real inspirations for Dracula. Fascinating! And the author's notes create more mystery....perfect for an October All Hallows Read!

Recap & Review

A sickly child, Bram experiences a miraculous recovery at the hands of the family's Nanna Ellen. But Bram and Matilda observe & record their nanny's pattern of mysteriously bizarre behavior until she vanishes one night. Years later, Matilda see's Ellen on a street in Paris -- she has not aged one day!

An excellent Gothic horror story filled with adventure and thrills -- and just a bit of gore.

Dacre Stoker & J.D.Barker

Stoker is Bram's great-grandnephew and the manager of the Bram Stoker Estate. Author of suspenseful horror stories, Barker's debut novel, Forsaken, was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist in 2014.

Stoker and Barker researched archives around the world attempting to reconstruct a missing 100 pages from Bram Stoker's original English edition of Dracula. Along the way they decided to use the material to write Dracul.

Learning Suggestions

Family Read Aloud Time
Reading to our teens is just as important as reading to younger children. In addition to sparking engaging conversations about deep topics, reading aloud continues to develop the listener's literacy and language skills!  Dracul is a perfect book to share for October's All Hallows Read!

Learning at Home
There are many ways to use Dracul to teach various skills - from an English compare and contrast with Dracula to a geography study of Britain, Ireland and Transylvania.  An Author Study is my favorite suggestion -- there is one of the richest resource veins about both Stokers available & appropriate for teens. Begin with
  • Dacre Stoker
  • Bram Stoker Estate
  • Bram Stoker

Classroom Resource
If you teach Gothic Literature, Course Hero is an exceptional resource for Dracula - unfortunately, there are very few online resources for teaching Dracul.
