Beneath The Waves & Drawn From Nature

8/23/2021

Science-nature picture book, 64 pages. A pictorial journey through the world's oceans with all of the art is created from pressed seaweed, coastal flowers and garden plants. Published in 2019 by Big Picture Press.

Amazing Journeys

"Swimming through the warm water comes a crowd of baby sea turtles. They have just survived a perilous journey down the beach where they hatched, past hungry crabs and gulls, into the welcoming waves of the sea...

"Now that the hatchlings have made it to the ocean, they will drift for years on the currents, eating plankton, prawns and small jellyfish."

Book Recap

These books are the most breathtakingly beautiful picture books of the more than 100 reviewed at Stories Matter.  If you are looking for a beautiful book to gift a nature-loving child, then you cannot go wrong with either of these titles.

Beneath the Waves: Explore the many different areas of the ocean and marvel at the more than one quarter of all of earth's creatures who make the ocean home.

Drawn from Nature: Read the Book Synopsis here.

Learning Ideas

Family Read Aloud Time
Hours of together time can be found in sharing these books with children and not just reading the science-based descriptions -- it would be fascinating to practice identifying the specific plants used in each illustration.

Learning at Home
Perhaps it's time to pull out, build or buy a plant press as you prepare for nature lessons? Plant identification, a study in seasonal changes, gardening, art - the learning possibilities are broad and deep.

Classroom Resource
These books are an art teacher's dream resource! The composition of each page is mind-boggling precise; my favorites are King of the Ice & Summer Nights' Owl. Children and teens will be inspired to create their own art from found, natural resources!
