Quote of the Week

"After a while, our robot's computer brain decided it was a good time to conserve energy. So she sat and anchored her hands to the rocks, her nonessential programs switched off, and then, in her own way, the robot slept."

Dear Farmhouse Diary,

Who knew robots rest?!

Little Guy is enamored of robots - especially those which can transform and participate in rescues! While he loves to play pretend games where robots rescue people, his absolute favorite game is what we call Transformer Yoga.  Little Guy creates a pose such as "bulldozer" or "airplane" and the adults are supposed to copy the pose -- he is really quite elegant in moving from one position to another, but also a stern little critic if the adult's technique or flexibility are lacking. Let me tell you, this game is a work-out!

Anyway, since everything in his play is about robots I thought I would find some books at the Library to share with Little Guy. We started reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, a chapter book which I thought might be over his head. But Little Guy loves it even though some situations or vocabulary need a bit of explaining. The book's premise is that after a severe storm destroys a cargo ship, a number of crates filled with robots wash ashore an island, but only one robot survives. Think Cast Away - only the Tom Hanks character is a new robot with artificial intelligence!

The story is not just a cute description of how AI learns, but it is filled with some pretty profound truths. Including the idea that all life needs to rest.  Recently, the Boss and I have been talking about the need to be more mindful of our routine and creating days of rest - or as the Boss says, "adventure days!"  Time where we purposefully
